1907 was a good year for Houston. It was the year that opened the door of help and hope to the city’s population of homeless men, establishing Star of Hope as the first such service in the area. Today, Star of Hope's Men's Development Center houses over 300 men nightly and provides emergency and residential programs. At times, due to extreme weather, the center will go into an over-flow mode and accommodate up to 100 additional clients. Chapel services are offered three times a day, as are meals. Showers and a clean change of clothing are also provided

The Open Door Mission’s (ODM) Russell M. Scott, Jr. M.D. Convalescent Care Center (RMSCCC) provides homeless men a safe short-term environment to continue their convalescence from surgery, injury or illness.  Residents are provided, at no cost, the basics of food, clothing, and shelter in a clean, supportive, and nurturing environment.

Rights of Passage… Rights of Passage (ROP) is a 12-month transitional living program for young adults between the ages of 18 and 21. The program is designed to provide young people with the tools they need in order to become self-sufficient, productive members of society. Resident advisors facilitate life skills workshops on topics such as money management, cooking, building healthy relationships and improving self-esteem. All program participants work and many are enrolled in school or vocational training programs. Residents are responsible for household chores. There is 24-hour supervision, and clients have access to all services provided by Covenant House Texas, including health care, counseling, GED preparation and vocational guidance

Rights of Passage Apartment Living (ROPAL)… After six months at ROP, qualified youths may apply for housing in a Covenant House Texas ROPAL apartment. This new program enables young adults to make the transition toward independence over the period of a year. With Covenant House Texas as the co-signer, the resident is responsible for a gradually increasing portion of the rent over the first nine months, paying the full balance during the last quarter. Apart from following a basic set of rules and hosting weekly visits from the ROPAL resident advisor, participants maintain an independent lifestyle. After successfully completing the program, the youth may opt to renew his or her lease as a resident entirely independent of Covenant House Texas.

The Adult Rehabilitation Center (ARC) repairs broken lives of men who are addicted to alcohol and drugs through a program that includes work therapy, recreation, worship, healthcare, education and counseling, both individual and group. Upon completion, the resident is ready to move into ARC Transitional Housing. In this phase of recovery, the man is preparing for return to family and community. The ARC operates all 7 Salvation Army Family Thrift Stores in the area.
